Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Across cultures, people honour loss and remembrance in ways that reflect their deepest values, each with its own beauty and meaning. At Folkekirken for Internationals, we cherish this diversity and strive to be a community where both joy and sorrow can be shared.
On this All Saints’ Day, we invite you to take part in the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, a celebration to step into and embrace, whether or not it forms part of your own background.
Bring a photo of your beloved and their favourite dish. We will sing, and celebrate the love of our departed together, as we will enjoy their favourite dishes.
The celebration at Eliaskirken is initiated by Edith Hernandez, a member of our community with Mexican origin. We are deeply grateful for her generosity in sharing this beautiful tradition with us.

About Día de los Muertos
Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition also observed in other Latin American countries. The celebration lasts three days: 31 October remembers young people who have passed away, 1 November remembers all saints, and 2 November remembers all departed souls.
During this time, families create home altars decorated with bread shaped like human figures, various other foods, flowers, candles, colourful paper decorations, and photos and personal items of deceased family members. It is believed that the souls of the departed family members return to visit, guided by the candles and the scents of the foods and flowers on the altar.
